Virtualisation has changed the game for the whole computers and technology in general. The benefits of having to set up virtual machines is something that is known all so well especially for the tech with experience and high curiosity. We would not get into the benefits of virtualisation assuming you are here, who already knows about what virtualisation is and how business can benefit from virtualisation, to know what are the network requirements for virtualisation and how it works.
Virtualisation greatest advantage
One of the coolest thing about virtualisation is not only you can connect to the Internet but you are also able to do lot more than that. Network works many different way for virtualisation. Hypervisors are able to do lot of things and connect each of the machines on network in number of ways. What would be that depends on the network requirements.
Internal Networking
This is one of the things to consider in certain situations. Let’s see one of such situation. This is the scenario, where you have bunch of virtual machines in your system. You want them to connect and see each other. Just that and you don’t need to connect to the internet. You are absolutely can do that without the need for connecting to the WAN. In this case, just four virtual machines who think they are the only computers in the existence.
Go the settings of each of your virtual machine and set their individual virtual NICs to the internal network. Where exactly is this setting depends on the kind of virtual machine you are using. Typically this should be somewhere under the settings name “Network” and “network adapter” but then again, where exactly it is may vary. Turning to internal network will make each of these virtual machines to think each of them is connected to its own switch.
This kind of network settings is perfect for the times when you just want to poke around with networking tool without potentially doing anything unsafe and put your system in jeopardy. This work like some sort virtual test network without having to affect your main system. There are lot of tools and utilities which are fun to poke around but you don’t want to do them over real network. For instance, Malware utilities, networks scanners etc. You just make few instances of virtual machines in your system, connect them via the internal network. That is it, you can poke around with such serious utilities as much as you want without having to destroy your system or messing up the whole network.
