As a rule, it is obvious when a person is suffering from severe alcoholism and the majority of the people with such an issue are aware of their condition even though some of them might be trying to deny the problem. Yet, the tragedy of alcoholism is related to the fact it actually starts a way more earlier than the majority of people think. For many individuals it is rather challenging to estimate the overconsumption of alcohol before they start facing particularly serious problems.
Still, there are several physical symptoms of alcohol abuse which should not be ignored as they can help a person to reverse the situation and quit the bad habit before it is too late.
The increase of weight
One of the signals of a body suffering from the overconsumption of alcohol is weight gain. This is a very typical situation for people who indulge themselves with alcoholic beverages too frequently and in larger amounts and there are several reasons why it is happening.
First of all, alcohol itself is rather high in calories. This is one of the reasons people who seriously want to lose weight refuse from drinking alcohol. For example, an average amount of calories contained in a 0,5 litre bottle of beer is the same as the caloric value of the bread made of white flour and equals to 239 kcal. You can imagine how much of calories is consumed by people who enjoy a couple of bottles during a part and certainly, by the people who drink litres of beer.
More potent alcohol is also rich in calories because ethanol itself is caloric. There is nothing surprising in it since one of the most popular alternative fuels used by humans is based on alcohols.
Unfortunately, this is not a single problem which causes weight gain in people who drink too much alcohol.
It is crucial to understand the way ethanol is affecting the brain. In fact, it is activating the parts of the brain which are responsible for the feeling of hunger. For that reason, people tend to eat without any boundaries when they are having alcohol.
Finally, it is not a secret that alcohol is harmful for the digestive system and it can severely harm liver and pancreas. These organs are crucial for a proper metabolism of an organism.
That is why putting on weight without having any apparent experience of overeating, indulging oneself into junk food or while being physically active can be one of the symptoms that the body is having too much of alcohol.
The deterioration of skin
One of the problems a person would pay attention to is sudden deterioration of the condition of one’s skin. Certainly, aging is making skin drier which adds to the development of wrinkles. For that reason many people do not notice the connection between alcohol abuse and the worsening appearance of their skin. Yet, alcohol has a rather serious impact of its condition.
Unfortunately, alcohol is promoting the loss of water in the body which is also true for the skin layers. Just like one feels rather thirsty after a party, the skin is also suffering from insufficient amount of water. This leads to several problems.
First of all, skin becomes less elastic which contributes to the appearance of wrinkles. This can also make pores on the skin more visible. At the same time, the entire face can change its shape. While skin can get more stretched in the cheekbones, it will be hanging loosely on other parts of the face. A peeling effect on the surface of the skin is also common.
While some of the problems can be masked at the beginning, with time it will become more and more difficult.
Finally, one of the perspectives of a person suffering from alcohol abuse is the damage of capillaries located in the skin. This is usually the result of the change in the blood thickness which happens because of the alcohol consumption. Such a change usually leads to the explosion of capillaries which results in skin redness as well as nets of red capillaries. Unfortunately, such changes are temporary.
Changes in the facial skin can be a serious symptom of alcohol abuse and should not be ignored even if one is not particularly worried about the skin appearance.
